正面描述 The commemorative obverse depicts two protesters standing before a neoclassical university building, evoking the student and worker uprisings of May 1968. The foreground figure raises a fist holding an object aloft, while a second figure to the left carries a flag. The mint marks — the Utrecht privy mark and the caduceus of the Royal Dutch Mint — appear to the left of the design. The bilingual legend 'MEI / MAI 1968' is inscribed in the upper field, with the commemorative date '2018' and the country code 'BE' in the lower left field. The outer copper-nickel ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.

附加信息

Belgium's decision to commemorate May 1968 on a circulating coin was quietly controversial — the events being marked were not Belgian at all, but centered on France, where student uprisings and a general strike nearly toppled de Gaulle's government. Belgian authorities framed the issue around the broader social movements of that year, which did produce significant labor unrest in Belgium itself, including strikes at major industrial sites in Liège and Charleroi that fed into subsequent wage reforms.

The fiftieth anniversary series of which this forms a part was approved under Philippe's reign, making it one of the more politically charged commemorative decisions of his tenure to date.
