| Aversbeschreibung | Bimetallic fantasy issue featuring a right-facing bust of Pau Claris Casademunt, the 17th-century Catalan statesman and President of the Generalitat, occupying the brass center field. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style with fine hair detail. The legend CATALUNYA arcs across the upper portion of the ring, while the dates 1641 and 2016 flank the portrait on left and right respectively, referencing the proclamation of the Catalan Republic. The inscription REPVBLICA appears along the lower arc of the ring in Roman lettering. |

| Reversbeschreibung | The brass center field displays the numeral 2 in large relief at center-right, accompanied by a stylized map of Europe in the left portion of the inner disc, consistent with standard euro reverse design conventions. The copper-nickel outer ring bears four inscriptions evenly spaced around the circumference: PROVA, ESSAI, PRUEBA, and TRIAL, representing the word 'trial' or 'pattern' in Catalan, French, Spanish, and English respectively, identifying this piece as a non-circulating fantasy or essay strike. |

This coin commemorates Pau Claris, the 17th-century Catalan lawyer and canon of Urgell who briefly proclaimed Catalonia a republic under French protection in January 1641 — a move that handed sovereignty to Louis XIII for less than twelve years before the region reverted to the Spanish Crown following the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. Spain issuing a coin honoring a man who formally renounced its authority is an irony sharpened considerably by the timing: the coin appeared in 2016, when tensions over Catalan independence had reached a pitch not seen since the Franco era.
