The legend 'ΠΑΦΟΣ 2017 – ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΠΡΩΤΕΥΟΥΣΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΥΡΩΠΗΣ' arcs around the upper field, while the bilingual country name 'ΚΥΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS' appears in the lower field. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European flag. The coin commemorates Paphos as the European Capital of Culture for 2017. |

Paphos held the European Capital of Culture title in 2017, shared with Aarhus, Denmark — the designation driving this commemorative issue. The city's claim to the honor rests on a cultural continuity stretching from its Mycenaean-era settlement through Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine occupation, all of which left stratified archaeological remains still being excavated today.
