| Opis awersu | The inner core depicts the keep of Varaždin Castle (Old Town), a fortified complex whose origins date to the 12th century and whose present Renaissance form evolved between the 13th and 16th centuries. The castle is rendered in detailed relief, evoking its architectural transformation from a medieval moated fortress — reconstructed after the Tatar invasion of 1242 — to the principal stronghold of the Slavonian Military Border, now recognised as a highest-category monument of Croatian architectural heritage. The legend 'STARI GRAD VARAŽDIN' (Old Town of Varaždin) is inscribed along the upper arc of the inner core, while the issuing country name 'HRVATSKA' and the year of issue '2024' appear along the lower arc. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union flag. |
