Narbonne's late-1990s local currency tokens belong to a wave of municipal "euro" issues that preceded the single currency's actual introduction, traded largely among merchants and markets as promotional instruments rather than legal tender. Narbonne itself had reason to lean into European identity — the city sits on the Via Domitia, Rome's first road in Gaul, and had long marketed that antiquity as civic currency. These aluminium pieces circulated briefly and were retired well before 2002 made the branding suddenly confusing.
