2 Euros - Nancy

Nancy's municipal "2 Euro" issues of the late 1990s belong to a wave of local emergency coinage — or more precisely, promotional token currency — that proliferated across French cities ahead of the 1999 introduction of the euro. Dozens of municipalities issued franc-denominated or notional "euro" tokens through agreements with the Monnaie de Paris or private minting houses, partly as civic promotion and partly to familiarize the public with euro-denominated values before legal adoption. Nancy, capital of Meurthe-et-Moselle and historically one of the great ducal seats of Lorraine, was among the earlier participants.

These pieces were never legal tender and circulated only within participating local commerce schemes.
