Greece issued this coin to mark the centenary of Callas's birth in 1923 — though the connection to Greece is more adoptive than native. She was born in New York to Greek immigrant parents and only moved to Athens as a teenager, studying at the Athens Conservatoire under Elvira de Hidalgo. Her Greek citizenship was a matter of some legal complexity during her international career, particularly when she sought to renounce it in favor of American nationality in the 1950s.
The 2 euro commemorative program has become one of Greece's more consistent uses of the denomination since the country entered the eurozone in 2001.
