Manolis Andronicos spent decades excavating at Vergina before his 1977 discovery of what he identified as the tomb of Philip II of Macedon — a find that reignited Greek claims over the ancient Macedonian heritage at the height of the naming dispute with the Republic of Macedonia. The political timing of this commemorative, issued the same year North Macedonia's name was formally settled under the Prespa Agreement, was almost certainly not coincidental.
