Additional information

Latvia joined the eurozone in January 2014 after years of fiscal austerity so severe — including a GDP contraction of roughly 25% between 2008 and 2010 — that it became an unlikely poster case for IMF-backed internal devaluation. Commemorative issues like this one, celebrating agrarian heritage, were politically deliberate choices by Latvijas Banka to anchor national identity within a currency Latvia had no hand in designing.

The farming theme connects to Latvia's pre-Soviet rural economy, which collectivization under occupation effectively dismantled after 1940.
