John Paul II's Vatican euro coinage was never intended for circulation — the Holy See joined the eurozone through a monetary agreement with Italy, but Vatican coins are produced exclusively as collector sets and never released into general circulation. The 2002–2005 span corresponds to the Pope's final years, a period of severe physical decline from Parkinson's disease; he died in April 2005, making this the last regular Vatican euro type struck under his pontificate before the sede vacante issues that followed.
