Obverse description The centre field depicts two standing figures, a man and a woman, flanking the monogram 'RI' (Repubblica Italiana) with the date '2008' inscribed between them. Symbolic motifs — an olive branch, an ear of corn, a cogwheel, and barbed wire — representing the rights to peace, food, work, and freedom respectively are incorporated into the composition. At the lower portion of the inner disc, chain links form the numeral '60', above the legend 'DIRITTI UMANI', commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The engraver's initials 'MCC' and the Rome Mint mark 'R' appear to the right of the design. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union.
