Obverse description The obverse features a stylised effigy of Grand Duke Henri I rendered in fine vertical line engraving against a striated background field, the portrait occupying the central zone of the nickel-brass inner disc. The country name LËTZEBUERG appears as an arc legend along the upper periphery of the inner disc, while the commemorative inscription UEM 1999-2009 is incused along the lower portion, flanking the engraver's initials ΓΣ and the Utrecht Mint privy mark. The outer copper-nickel ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union arranged equidistantly, a standard motif on all eurozone commemorative 2 euro pieces.
