Obverse description The obverse features two superimposed effigies of Charles de Gaulle: a background profile depicting him in military uniform, evoking his historic appeal of 18 June 1940 and the Liberation of Paris, and a foreground profile representing him during his second presidential term. A Lorraine Cross — the emblem of Free France adopted by de Gaulle in 1940 — is prominently displayed in the field, with the initials 'RF' semi-integrated into its design and the dates '1890', '1970', and '2020' inscribed within it. The legend 'CHARLES DE GAULLE' appears in the field alongside these dates. The design is the work of engraver Joaquin Jimenez. The coin's outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of de Gaulle's death and the 80th anniversary of the June 18, 1940 Appeal — the BBC radio address in which he called on French citizens to resist the German occupation. The coin was authorized as part of France's ongoing commemorative €2 program, which the Monnaie de Paris has used aggressively since the series opened to member states in 2004.

De Gaulle died on November 9, 1970, ten days before his 80th birthday.
