Garajonay National Park covers roughly 40% of La Gomera, one of the smaller and less-visited Canary Islands, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 largely for its exceptional preservation of laurisilva — a laurel forest ecosystem that once blanketed much of southern Europe during the Tertiary period before being wiped out by the Pleistocene ice ages. La Gomera's topography and persistent cloud cover kept it alive. This coin is part of Spain's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage series, which has run across multiple collector programs since 2010.
