| Obverse description | The bimetallic centre features a facing portrait of Pope Francis (Franciscus), depicted in three-quarter view to the right, wearing a white zucchetto and papal vestments with a clerical collar. The effigy, executed in fine relief by engraver Maria Carmela Colaneri after a design by P. Daniele, conveys a naturalistic and austere likeness of the pontiff. The legend CITTA DEL VATICANO is inscribed along the upper arc of the copper-nickel ring, flanked by twelve stars of the European Union. The mint mark R (Rome) and the year of issue appear to the lower right of the portrait, accompanied by the engraver's signature P. DANIELE in small incuse lettering. |
