Finland's nomination of sauna culture to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list was accepted in November 2018 — the same year this coin was issued — making it one of the rare instances where a commemorative €2 and its underlying cultural recognition land in the same calendar year. The Finnish sauna tradition, practiced by an estimated 3.3 million saunas for a population of 5.5 million people, carries genuine social and ritual weight far beyond leisure.
