Additional information

Felipe VI acceded to the throne on 19 June 2014 following the abdication of his father Juan Carlos I — the first Spanish abdication in nearly two centuries. Juan Carlos had signed the abdication instrument just days earlier, on June 2nd, triggering a constitutional process completed so rapidly that this commemorative issue was authorized and struck within the same calendar year. Spain had no standing abdication law at the time; the government passed emergency legislation specifically to enable the transfer.
