The Vienna–Bratislava express mail route, established in the early 19th century, was one of the shortest and busiest postal corridors in the Habsburg Empire — the two capitals sit just 55 kilometers apart, closer than any other pair of national capitals in the world. This coin marks the bicentennial of organized postal service on that corridor, issued as part of Slovakia's ongoing joint commemorative program with Austria.
The joint issue pairing is noteworthy: Austria released a corresponding commemorative in the same year, a rare instance of two eurozone members co-theming separate national €2 pieces around a shared historical infrastructure.
