The 2016 edition was the first to expand to 24 national teams, a format change UEFA pushed through despite considerable resistance from purists who argued it diluted qualifying standards. The tournament itself was overshadowed by security concerns following the November 2015 Paris attacks, with French authorities deploying over 90,000 police and military personnel across host cities.
The Monnaie de Paris issued this piece under its standard commemorative program, which produces €2 coins in volumes large enough that most examples reached circulation rather than collector hands.
