Additional information

Spain's commemorative two-euro program has issued coins honoring UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2010, and the Monastery and Site of El Escorial — designated by UNESCO in 1984 — was a predictable but long-delayed inclusion. Philip II commissioned the complex in 1563 following the Spanish victory at Saint-Quentin, fulfilling a vow made during the battle.

Mintage was set at 4 million pieces, split between circulation strikes and collector sets, making this one of the more available Spanish commemoratives from the period.
