| Obverse description | The central disc bears a typographic composition in which the letters of 'D-DAY' are stylised to evoke a landing craft and a tank gun barrel, with the dual date '1944–2014' positioned above the barrel. The commemorative legend '70e ANNIVERSAIRE DU DÉBARQUEMENT' arcs across the lower field. In the exergue area, receding bootprints—representing Allied troops of American, British, and Canadian forces—are depicted being washed away by a wave, which itself bears the engraved text of the opening lines of Paul Verlaine's poem 'Chanson d'Automne', used as a coded signal for the commencement of the Normandy landings: 'Les sanglots longs des violons de l'automne Blessent mon coeur d'une langueur monotone'. The country identifier 'RF' (République Française) appears within the central composition, and the outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union. |
