Commemorating the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic, completed in 1922 by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral flying from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro. The journey took roughly 79 days and required three aircraft — two were lost at sea and replaced mid-voyage. Coutinho's contribution was technical as much as aviatory: he adapted the sextant for aerial navigation without a visible horizon, a genuinely novel solution that made the crossing possible at all.
The coin marks the centenary of that 1922 flight.
