Obverse description The obverse centre features a reproduction of the celebrated Palaeolithic bison cave painting from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Altamira, rendered in low relief with careful attention to the contoured, naturalistic lines of the prehistoric original. The bison is depicted in a recumbent or crouching posture, its head turned forward, faithfully evoking the polychrome rock art of the cave located in Cantabria, northern Spain. The legend ESPAÑA arcs across the upper field, with the date 2015 inscribed at the base of the inner disc. The Madrid Mint mark (crowned M) appears to the right of the central motif. The outer copper-nickel ring carries the standard twelve stars of the European Union.
