| Aversbeschreibung | The inner disc features a stylised depiction of a carnation rendered in two sweeping curves, referencing the flower that became the enduring symbol of Portugal's Revolução dos Cravos. The legend PORTUGAL flanks the national coat of arms, positioned at the upper arc of the design, while the inscription 25 DE ABRIL occupies the central field. Below, the commemorative legends 40 ANOS and the issuance year 2014 are inscribed in period-inspired lettering evocative of the typographic style used in revolutionary posters and political ephemera of 1974. The engraver's name INCM – JOSÉ TEIXEIRA appears in the lower field. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union in relief. |

The Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, ended 48 years of authoritarian rule under the Estado Novo regime — the longest-surviving fascist dictatorship in Western Europe. The coup was executed by left-wing military officers and succeeded with almost no bloodshed, a rarity in any coup of that scale. Carnations, placed into rifle barrels by civilian sympathizers, became the enduring symbol of the day after a flower seller near the soldiers reportedly began distributing them.
This commemorative marks the 40th anniversary of the event. Portugal has issued several €2 commemoratives tied to its 20th-century political history, and this ranks among the more historically substantive of them.
