Issued as part of Spain's ongoing commemorative regional series, this coin marks the Canary Islands' status as one of Spain's autonomous communities — an archipelago whose political integration into the Spanish state carried particular complexity given its geographic position off the northwest African coast and its separate historical administrative treatment under Franco. The series itself was Spain's first systematic use of the €2 commemorative format, launched the same year.
