| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse depicts a detailed relief of the Porta Nigra, the imposing late Roman city gate of Trier and one of the most celebrated ancient monuments in Germany, rendered in fine three-quarter perspective view occupying the central field. The date 2017 appears in the upper field above the structure, while the legend RHEINLAND-PFALZ is inscribed in the lower field beneath the monument. The mint mark letter of the issuing facility appears to the lower left of the gate, and the engraver's initials 'Ch' appear to the lower right. The bimetallic outer ring carries twelve raised five-pointed stars, representing the member states of the European Union, evenly distributed around the circumference. |
