Germany's Bundesländer commemorative €2 series has run since 2006, systematically cycling through all sixteen states. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's 2024 issue marks one of the later entries in that rotation. The state itself was reconstituted in 1990 from territory that had been administratively divided across multiple East German districts since 1952 — the GDR had deliberately fragmented the historic regional boundaries to suppress pre-war political identities.
Five mint facilities struck this issue, each carrying its own mint mark: A (Berlin), D (Munich), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe), and J (Hamburg).
