Hamburg's entry in the long-running Bundesländer series, which began in 2006 and has cycled through all sixteen German states, was issued in 2023 as one of two commemorative €2 releases that year. The series was designed to rotate annually, giving each state a turn — Hamburg had previously appeared in the first wave, making this a second-issue state.
Five German mints struck the coin: Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G), and Hamburg (J) itself.
