Reverse description The standard European Union reverse designed by Luc Luycx features the numeral '2' in large format occupying the left portion of the inner disc, alongside a map of the European continent rendered without internal borders, symbolising unity among member states. The face value 'EURO' appears in the field adjacent to the numeral. The designer's initials 'LL' are inscribed discreetly within the design. The outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European flag.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, this coin was part of a coordinated eurozone commemorative release — Germany, France, and several other member states each struck their own design for the occasion. The Monnaie de Paris piece represents the French contribution to that joint program.

The wall itself came down not through formal negotiation but through a miscommunication: East German spokesman Günter Schabowski announced the opening of borders at a press conference, apparently unaware the order wasn't yet meant to take effect, prompting crowds to overwhelm the checkpoints that same evening.
