Obverse description The obverse commemorates the Year for Priests proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, observed from 19 June 2009 to 19 June 2010. The central design depicts a shepherd rescuing a lamb from the jaws of a lion, rendered in relief against a plain field, symbolising pastoral care and clerical vocation. The legend ANNO SACERDOTALE arcs across the upper field, with R CITTÀ DEL VATICANO and the date 2010 completing the inscription, along with the engraver's name VEROI. The outer ring of the bimetallic coin bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
