| Obverse description | The nickel-brass centre features conjoined left-facing effigies of Queen Beatrix and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, with the Queen's portrait in the foreground and the Prince's slightly behind to the left. A circular legend surrounds the portraits, reading 'WILLEM-ALEXANDER PRINS VAN ORANJE' on the left and 'BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN' on the right, separated by a small crown device at the top. The date '28 JANUARI 2013' and the Utrecht mint mark appear in the lower portion of the inner disc. The outer copper-nickel ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. |

Issued to mark the abdication of Queen Beatrix on April 30, 2013 — Koninginnedag, a date deliberately chosen to coincide with the existing national holiday — and the simultaneous investiture of Willem-Alexander, the first Dutch king in 123 years. Beatrix had ruled since 1980, and her own mother Juliana abdicated in the same fashion, on the same holiday, in that year. The Dutch monarchy has made abdication at around age 75 a near-institutional practice, unlike most European royal houses.
The coin was released the same day as the investiture ceremony in Amsterdam.
