| Obverse description | The bimetallic centre features a composite design uniting a hoplite shield and a running warrior-figure, symbolising the Greek struggle for freedom at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. A bird motif on the shield alludes to the birth of Western civilisation as shaped by this pivotal engagement. The engraver's initials 'GS' appear in the field.
