| Obverse description | The bimetallic centre features a composite design uniting a hoplite shield and a running warrior-figure, symbolising the Greek struggle for freedom at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. A bird motif on the shield alludes to the birth of Western civilisation as shaped by this pivotal engagement. The engraver's initials 'GS' appear in the field. A circular legend in Greek script surrounding the central device reads 'ΜΑΡΑΘΩΝΑΣ 2500 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ' and 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ 490 Π.Χ. 2010 Μ.Χ.', commemorating the 2500th anniversary of the battle. The copper-nickel outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. |
