Obverse description The nickel-brass centre features a three-quarter facing portrait of Bartolomeo Borghesi, the celebrated 19th-century numismatist and epigraphist, rendered in a naturalistic sculptural style by engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini. The subject is depicted in contemporary dress, with fine detail in the facial modelling and clothing. The legend BARTOLOMEO BORGHESI runs along the left inner field, while SAN MARINO arcs vertically along the right, and the date 2004 appears at the base of the inner circle. The mint mark R and the engraver's initials E.L.F. are inscribed in the lower left field. The outer copper-nickel ring bears twelve five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European Union.
