Obverse description The inner disc of the obverse depicts a detailed architectural view of the ancient ruins of the Archaeological Site of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Greece, featuring the remains of a monumental basilica with tiered stone walls at centre-left and a row of classical columns with acanthus-leaf capitals to the right. A decorative meander frieze border runs along the lower portion of the inner field. The legend ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΣ ΧΩΡΟΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΩΝ (Archaeological Site of Philippi) curves along the upper arc of the inner disc, with ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Hellenic Republic) inscribed to the left and the date 2017 appearing in the field to the left of the ruins. The engraver's initials appear in small relief at lower left. The outer copper-nickel ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
