Additional information

Andreas Kalvos spent most of his adult life in exile — in Italy, Switzerland, and England — yet produced the two collections of odes, published in 1824 and 1826, that secured his place in the Greek national canon. He then effectively abandoned poetry altogether, moved to England permanently, and spent his final decades teaching Greek in Corfu and later in Louth, Lincolnshire, where he died in 1869. Greece issued this coin to mark the 150th anniversary of his death.
