Monaco's 2022 commemorative issue marks the centenary of Prince Albert I's death in 1922 — a figure whose scientific reputation far outpaced his political one. He founded the Oceanographic Institute in Paris in 1906 and the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco the following year, both of which remain active research institutions. The reigning Albert II, his great-great-nephew, shares the oceanographic interest, giving the pairing an unusual biographical coherence rarely seen in commemorative pairings of this kind.
