The Marquisate of Baux was a medieval lordship centered on Les Baux-de-Provence, whose ruling dynasty claimed descent from the Magi — specifically Balthazar — and incorporated the Star of Bethlehem into their heraldry as a result. Albert II, who held the marquisate in the 13th century, was among the most powerful of the Baux lords, controlling territory across Provence at a time when the family's influence rivaled that of the counts of Provence themselves. The dynasty died out in the male line in 1426, after which the lordship passed to René of Anjou.
