This coin commemorates the foundation of the Monaco fortress, traditionally dated to 1215, when the Genoese Ghibelline faction under François Grimaldi's ancestors began construction on the Rock — though the Grimaldi family didn't actually seize control until 1297, when François himself entered disguised as a Franciscan monk. The distinction between founding and conquering is one Monaco's official commemorative program tends to blur.
Struck by the Monnaie de Paris under its contract with the Principality, as Monaco operates no mint of its own.
