Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing effigy of King Albert II of Belgium, rendered in high relief within the inner disc. The royal monogram — a capital 'A' surmounted by a crown with the Roman numeral 'II' below — appears to the left of the portrait in the field. The inscription 'A II' and the year of issue are incused within the design. Twelve stars of the European Union are arranged in a continuous circle around the inner disc within the outer ring, conforming to the standard common obverse format of Belgian euro coinage. The engraving is attributed to Jan Alfons Keustermans.
