| 正面描述 | Central brass field depicts a frontal view of the Cottonera Gate (also known as the Zabbar Gate), a Baroque monumental gateway in Malta, rendered in fine relief with columns, arched portal, and decorative stonework. The structure is set within the inner brass disc of the bimetallic flan. The copper-nickel outer ring is decorated with a border of thirteen raised five-pointed stars on each side. The legend 'MALTA' appears at the top of the outer ring and 'COTTONERA' at the bottom, both in raised Latin capitals separated by star motifs. |

Malta joined the eurozone on January 1, 2008, replacing the Maltese lira after 41 years of independent currency. The transition was politically contentious — a vocal minority argued the lira's dissolution erased a hard-won symbol of post-colonial identity, and the final conversion rate of MTL 0.4293 to €1 was debated in parliament through the late months of 2007.
