| Obverse description | The gold-coloured centre features a left-facing portrait of Dante Alighieri, the renowned Italian poet, rendered in high relief after a medieval effigy. The figure is laureate with a wreath of foliage extending across the right field, occupying much of the inner disc in an artistic, naturalistic style. To the left of the portrait appear the monogram 'IR' (Italian Republic) above the date, with the mint mark 'R' (Rome) positioned below the bust near the lower rim. The engraver's initials 'M.C.C.' appear in the lower right field of the centre. Twelve five-pointed stars adorn the cupro-nickel outer ring, representing the European Union. |
