Italy was among the twelve nations to adopt the euro at launch, but the map design used on this coin contained a cartographic error that went largely unnoticed until the series was already in mass circulation — the depiction of Europe excluded certain overseas territories in a way that prompted quiet diplomatic friction. The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, Rome's state mint with origins tracing to 1466, produced billions of these pieces across the six-year run before the reverse was updated in 2008 to reflect a revised pan-European map design adopted uniformly across all eurozone members.
