2 Euros 1st map

Greece was the last of the twelve initial eurozone members to have its coins ready for circulation, with production delays pushing final delivery to within days of the January 2002 launch. The "1st map" reverse — used across all participating nations through 2006 — depicted only the fifteen EU member states, a design that became obsolete almost immediately after the 2004 enlargement added ten new members and rendered the geography incomplete.

Greek euro coins from the earliest 2002 production runs were struck at the Athens mint as well as under contract in Finland and France, creating subtle die and finish variations that remain a minor but genuine collecting subspecialty.
