| Obverse description | The centre of the coin depicts Europa, the Phoenician princess of Greek mythology, seated side-saddle upon the back of Zeus disguised as a bull, rendered in a dynamic classical style inspired by an ancient Cretan mosaic. The figure of Europa is shown semi-draped, her upper body bare, turning slightly as she grasps the bull's horn with her right hand while her drapery billows behind her. The legend ΕΥΡΩΠΗ appears to the upper left of the central field, and the denomination 2 ΕΥΡΩ is inscribed at the lower centre. The engraver's initials (ΓΣ) and a small floral mintmark appear in the field, with the date divided on either side of a star at the lower rim of the bimetallic ring, which is adorned with twelve raised stars. |
