Additional information

Latvia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2014, making this the first regular-issue 2 Euro coin struck for the country. The timing was politically charged — neighboring Lithuania watched closely, having delayed its own accession after failing the inflation criterion in 2006, and ultimately following Latvia into the euro in 2015.

The Latvijas Banka oversaw the transition from the lats, a currency that had itself only been restored in 1922 after Soviet-era suppression and again in 1993 following independence.
