All three Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — declared independence in 1918, and their centenary in 2018 prompted a rare coordinated commemorative issue across all three central banks simultaneously. Each country struck its own coin, but the three were designed to complement one another as a set, a deliberate act of regional solidarity that had no precedent in modern eurozone commemorative practice.
Estonia itself had been absorbed into the Soviet Union in 1940 under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and did not restore its central bank until 1990. The 1918 founding date carried particular political weight in Tallinn.
