San Marino joined the eurozone through a monetary agreement with the EU rather than formal membership, giving the microstate the right to mint its own euro coins in limited quantities — a privilege that has made San Marino issues consistently scarce in circulation. The 2012 commemorative marking ten years of euro cash was one of several such releases coordinated across eurozone members and associated territories that year, though San Marino's mintage figures ran far lower than those of any sovereign EU state participating in the same program.
