Obverse description Central field depicts the historical scene known as the 'Vase of Soissons': a helmeted Frankish warrior at right, rendered in draped robes and holding a staff, stands opposite a semi-nude figure at left who raises an axe to smash a large amphora-style vase placed between the two figures. The composition references the celebrated episode from the reign of Clovis I. The curved legend 'CLOVIS à SOISSONS' arcs across the upper field, while the descriptive legend 'la scène du vase' curves along the lower field.
