| Obverse description | Within the brass centre, a helmeted female figure in classical robes — evocative of Hibernia or Britannia — is depicted seated on a throne, holding a globe in each hand. The date 2005 appears to the left of the figure in the field. The inscriptions PROBE to the left and ESSAI PATTERN to the right are incused radially within the centre. The copper-nickel outer ring bears the legend NORTHERN IRELAND around the upper arc, with olive branch ornaments flanking the lower portion of the ring. |

| Reverse description | The reverse follows the standard European 2 Euro pattern design format, with the large numeral 2 dominating the left half of the field against a grid background. To the right, a figural group in high relief depicts a male figure seated and a standing female figure, both in classical drapery, jointly holding a scroll or document; an architectural or decorative element appears in the upper right background. The bimetallic border ring is plain and unlettered. |
